By converting a convection furnace for preheating the extrusion billets from gas to electric operation, Neuman Aluminium Strangpresswerk GmbH is significantly reducing its natural gas consumption per tonne of aluminium. It is the first of several steps taken by the company to continue its clear strategy towards more sustainable production and to rely on energy-efficient power sources.
Careful use of resources and sustainable growth
Sustainability is firmly anchored in the corporate strategy of the entire Neuman Aluminium Group. A central pillar is the production, processing and use of around 22,400 tonnes of secondary aluminium per year, which optimises the recycling flow in aluminium production. At the same time, energy consumption is continuously monitored in order to realise further savings potential. The company makes targeted investments in environmentally friendly technologies in the individual plants: photovoltaic systems and the purchase of electricity from local hydroelectric power plants help to sustainably reduce CO2 emissions.
Energy efficiency instead of fossil fuels
Neuman Aluminium Strangpresswerk GmbH is implementing a multi-stage renewal programme at its Marktl (Lower Austria) site. It ranges from the installation of LED lighting in the production halls and cooling measures using well water to automated profile recognition at the press outlet and the associated cooling by fans. The most recent milestone is the conversion of the first preheating furnace from gas to electric operation. Several million euros are being invested in the entire major project.
‘Despite economically challenging times, it is important to us to pursue long-term sustainability goals. With this investment, we can take another important step towards decarbonisation and drive forward the reduction of fossil fuels in our production. As a company with regional roots, we have a special responsibility, especially towards the environment and future generations,’ says Thomas Eutebach, Managing Director of Neuman Aluminium Strangpresswerk GmbH.
Tangible savings and measurable progress
The first phase of the conversion project was completed at the end of 2024: The first electric furnace is in trial operation. With a planned annual volume of 12,500 tonnes of profiles, this measure will save 535 tonnes of CO2 per year - equivalent to the average emissions of 357 cars. This will be achieved by replacing 2634MWh of gas with 1600MWh of certified electricity from renewable energy sources. This 40% saving can be realised through more efficient thermal processes. An important contribution to our environment and sustainable growth for generations to come. Further conversion measures will follow in the course of the year.
